Knowing how to create natural skincare products is a fulfilling and empowering skill. It enables you to craft your own fluffy body butter, blend botanical toner, or mix organic serum, reducing your reliance on store-bought formulations. Once you grasp the art of making natural skincare products, you may never need to purchase a cleanser again, as it is a fun and straightforward process.
However, if you’re consulting this step-by-step guide, you might be anxious about following some of the do-it-yourself instructions found online while learning to make natural skincare products. You don’t want to produce insecure, unstable, or unsellable skincare formulas based on internet recipes. Instead, you aim to create professional, organic skincare products that are genuinely effective.
So, what are the measures you need to learn to produce natural skincare products that are both secure and stable?
STEP 1. Selecting Botanical Ingredients for Natural Skincare Products
One of the most enjoyable aspects of creating natural skincare products is working with the diverse range of botanical ingredients available to formulators. Every formulator is thrilled by the chance to experiment with various herbs, leaves, stalks, roots, petals, buds, barks, seeds, and flowers.
There is a worldwide trend towards combining beauty with wellness, where consumers prefer plant-based ingredients in their beauty products. They believe that we have neglected the knowledge of plants passed down from our ancestors. Many traditional remedies are being rediscovered and utilized, which is why we want to incorporate these incredible plants into our natural skincare products.
However, not all botanical ingredients are suitable for use on the skin, and some should be used in low concentrations. Therefore, you must conduct research to determine which botanical ingredients are ideal for your formulation.

STEP 1. Selecting Botanical Ingredients for Natural Skincare Products
Growing Skincare Herbs
Are you cultivating your botanical ingredients? Here at Formula Botanica, many of our graduates have established extensive herb gardens with the goal of using their harvest in their formulations. If you are, you must devise a plan to cultivate the appropriate skincare herbs, such as:
- Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
- Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis or Matricaria recutita)
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
- Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)
- Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis)
Next, you’ll need to determine the best way to harvest your skincare herbs, dry them, and convert them into extracts. The simplest approach is to macerate herbs like calendula, chamomile, and lavender into carrier oils, while aloe vera can be utilized straight from the plant (but should be preserved immediately). Marshmallow has gel-like properties, so it can be turned into a decoction (which should also be preserved immediately when creating natural skincare products).
Purchasing Skincare Herbs
If making your own extracts is too complicated, don’t worry because there are many cosmetic ingredient companies worldwide that can sell you extracts. When purchasing extracts, make sure you follow these four steps:
INCI
Begin by looking up the cosmetic name for your chosen extract. The beauty industry utilizes a naming system known as the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI – pronounced “inky”). Your extract should list all components in the bottle, including any preservatives or solvents that may have to be added to give them a shelf life. Armed with this information, you should be aware of precisely what is in the ingredient you’re purchasing.
Skin Compatibility
Now that you’ve decided to make natural skincare products, you want to ensure that you choose the appropriate components to benefit the skin. Inquire with your suppliers about what your plant-based extracts can do for your skin and ensure that the science supports it.
Solubility Oil
and water do not mix. Oil floats on top of water. If you intend to create an oil-based serum, you will not be able to include a water-based plant extract in it. Similarly, if you’re creating a toner and intend to add essential oils, they will float on top of the toner. Verify the solubility of your chosen extract.
Sustainability
In a world where we are rapidly losing our biodiversity and destroying habitats, we must be extremely cautious about the origins of our botanical ingredients. Huge demand from a variety of industries, including the cosmetic sector, is causing certain plants to be overharvested. Certain aromatic trees, in particular, are under significant ecological stress. Always ensure that you check the sustainability of your components by questioning your suppliers when you decide to create natural skincare products.
Selecting Skincare Herbs
Now that you’ve decided whether to grow or purchase your plant-based extracts, it’s time to choose the ones you want to work with. Let your surroundings, interests, and environment inspire you.
At Formula Botanica, we encourage our students to approach skincare formulation as both an art and a science – drawing inspiration from anywhere: colors, flavors, countries, music, nature, words, emotions, and seasons. Some skincare companies create product lines based on the beauty traditions of a specific culture. Others are influenced by foods, emotions, or geographic regions.
We suggest selecting a few ingredients that truly pique your interest, researching them, and starting with simple formulations.
Additionally, it’s crucial to avoid purchasing very expensive ingredients when first starting to create natural skincare products. You will likely experience many formulation failures, so it’s best to begin with the simplest approach possible.
STEP 2. Creating Natural Skincare Products
Now that you have a general idea of the ingredients you want to use, it’s time to determine which natural skincare product you want to create. The possibilities are endless: you can choose to make butters, balms, lotions, serums, gels, masks, scrubs, oils, cleansers, creams, toners, moisturizers – or even branch out into haircare and start making natural shampoos, conditioners, or styling products.
Start with Simple and Anhydrous Formulations
If you’re new to making natural skincare products, we always recommend starting with simple and safe formulations. The best way to do this is by making anhydrous skincare formulations, which do not contain any water, so they won’t require preservation. Examples of anhydrous formulations include body butters, face oils, balm cleansers, lip balms, or powdered masks.
The reason we suggest starting with anhydrous formulations is that oil-based formulations are not breeding grounds for microbes and do not require preservation. However, they do require an antioxidant such as Vitamin E or Rosemary CO2 extract, which will slow down the process of your oils and butters going rancid.

STEP 2. Creating Natural Skincare Products
Experiment with Inexpensive Ingredients
It’s easy to get carried away with your botanical skincare ingredients when creating natural skincare products. The first time you receive a delivery of luxurious carrier oils, fragrant essential oils, delicate hydrosols, exciting emulsifiers, and exotic plant extracts, you might be tempted to design a formulation that contains all of them.
However, as any formulator can attest, mistakes are inevitable. This is a good thing because you will learn more from your mistakes. Especially when you move beyond anhydrous formulations, you will find that emulsions, gels, and foaming products can be difficult to get right.
Never start experimenting with your most precious ingredients. Instead, make that emulsion with water and a cheap vegetable oil. Once you’ve mastered the technique, start trialing your gorgeous plant-based ingredients and get to know how they behave.
Practice, Practice, Practice
Lastly, you can only create natural skincare products that are safe and stable if you practice. For example, emulsification is a technique that requires trial and error (or as our Education Team at Formula Botanica sometimes says, “trial and horror”!).
Set up your artisan lab and dedicate time to making the same skincare formulation several times in slightly different ways. Treat the process of creating natural skincare products as a fun experiment, where you see how your ingredients behave at different percentages or when blended with other ingredients.
Initially, your balms may be grainy, your emulsions may split, your essential oils may not blend with your toners, and your cleansers may not foam. But with practice, you’ll create a gorgeous thin lotion to use for yourself or give to friends and family.
STEP 3. Understanding Natural Preservation
When creating natural skincare products, it’s important to have a plan for creating safe formulations, which means deciding whether or not to use preservatives.
The choice is simple: either make only anhydrous formulations, which don’t require a preservative, or create natural skincare products that contain water, which will need a preservative if you want them to have a shelf life of longer than a week. You should also consider how to preserve products that will have water introduced to them, such as an oil-based salt scrub that you might keep in the shower.
There are thousands of unsafe recipes online that ask you to blend together water-based ingredients without a preservative, which can go mouldy and encourage microbial growth within a matter of days. You simply do not want to be rubbing microbes all over your face, which is why it’s essential to get the safety right.

STEP 3. Understanding Natural Preservation
Be Proud of Preservation
At Formula Botanica, we believe in being proud of preservation because natural preservatives protect your skincare formulation, your customers, and your business if you plan to sell your natural skincare products. And let’s not forget that the risk of using preservatives is significantly lower than that of using unpreserved water-based cosmetics.
The good news is that it’s still possible to create natural skincare products that contain gorgeous botanical ingredients based on water, such as hydrosols or aloe vera gel, while ensuring that those formulations are safely and naturally preserved.
Please remember that Vitamin E, grapefruit seed extract, and rosemary extract are NOT preservatives. These ingredients are added to natural skincare formulations to extend the shelf life of the oils and butters contained in them. Antioxidants delay oils and butters from going rancid. As we saw in Step 2, you can extend the shelf life of an oil by adding an antioxidant to it.
Our Natural Preservation Checklist
The best way to choose a natural preservative is to:
- Check that your natural preservative has broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, fungus, and yeast. Does it need to be paired with another preservative to fully protect your formulation? You don’t want to use a preservative that only works against one type of microorganism and lets another type proliferate in your lotion.
- Make sure that your natural preservative is compatible with your formulation. Does it have the right solubility? Does it have the right pH range? These are all tricky components of creating natural skincare products, but an online formulation course such as Formula Botanica’s Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation can help explain many of these concepts in detail.
- Determine how long a shelf life your natural skincare product requires. If you intend to keep your lotion for over a year but your preservative only works for 3-6 months, you may need to consider changing your choice.
- Consider how easy it is to work with this natural preservative. Does it require boosters or need to be dissolved at a certain temperature? Try to make your life as simple as possible when selecting the right preservative.
STEP 4. Organize your workspace
Even if you’re creating skincare products for personal use, it’s important to have a clean and sanitized workspace to prevent contamination. The last thing you want is to spend time and money creating a beautiful serum only to find out it’s been contaminated with kitchen bacteria!
If you’re making skincare products at home, it’s best to set up a dedicated workspace, separate from your kitchen. However, if you do use your kitchen, be sure to sanitize the entire area and keep it clean each time you formulate.

STEP 4. Organize your workspace
To maintain a safe and effective workspace, remember these key points:
IMPLEMENT GOOD HYGIENE
Keep your workspace clean, tidy, and well-ventilated, free from food, drink, smoke, and any illnesses or infections. Clean and maintain your equipment before and after each use, and always wash your hands!
SAFETY FIRST
Be safe when handling skincare ingredients, equipment, and products in your workspace. While natural skincare products are generally safe for skin, some ingredients can cause sensitization if applied in high concentrations, such as essential oils. Always use proper personal protective equipment like gloves and aprons, which are inexpensive and easy to find.
GOOD STORAGE
Store your ingredients in a cool, dark space or the fridge, following the storage conditions recommended by your supplier. Keep your finished formulations in a sealed and safe environment, away from direct heat and light, and labeled properly. Good storage practices help ensure the safety and longevity of your products.
STEP 5. Transform your new skills into a natural skincare business
Once you realize how simple and enjoyable it is to produce natural skincare goods, you may choose to turn your newfound abilities into a beauty business. If you adore your creations, there is no reason you can’t market them. Natural skincare has never been more in demand, and it is anticipated that the global organic personal care industry will reach $54 billion by 2027.

STEP 5. Transform your new skills into a natural skincare business
DEVELOPING A NATURAL SKINCARE PRODUCT LINE
When developing a beauty product line, your natural skincare formulations should all function together to benefit your clients, and each formulation should have the same overarching goal. For instance, if your objective is to create gentle skincare using just a few components, each of your formulations should reflect that philosophy. Consider your products’ characteristics and advantages since they will play a vital part in the success of your beauty brand.
You should also consider how your formulations complement one another. Consider how your clients could use each item. If you make a collection of five shampoos, you will need five different clients to purchase them, or you will have to wait for your first customer to use each bottle and come back for another one. While there is nothing wrong with this approach, you will need to find more clients to sell to.
In contrast, if you create a cleanser, toner, mask, moisturizer, and serum, one customer can utilize each of your products simultaneously. This gives you the chance to sell additional products to the same customer. (Interested in learning how to start your own beauty business?
